The most dangerous things
An avalanche is snow that falls fast down on heaps of mountains.
A avalanche can not happen on underground mountains.
A volcano is a mountain that pops out lava.
The lava can turn into a lava stream.
Lava is melted rocks
A hurricane is as dangerous as two huripari.
It's like a tsunami but the water does not go as high.
A drought is when it hasn't rained for a long time.
It's so hot that you can not live long.

Have you seen a volcano in real life?
Do you know something about a avalanche?
Do you live close to a mountain?

Volcanoes
We have been learning about volcanoes in the Tigers group.
How volcanoes are made.
Volcanoes form where lava comes up a crack in the earth's crust. The lava cools and turns into hard rock. It builds up and forms a volcano. Volcanoes are made out of ash and lava and rocks.
Under sea volcanoes.
When lava hits water it makes obsidian or cobblestone.
When an under sea volcano erupts it may form an island.
Some people know where to find most volcanoes by learning about the movement of the earth.
Gets hotter when near to the centre of the earth.
Volcano types. there are six types of volcanoes, fissure, shield, dome, ash-cinder, composite and caldera.
Dormant-don't know if it will erupt.
Active-can erupt at any time.
Extinct-will not erupt.
Have you seen a volcano?
Do you like volcanos?
Have you ever seen one erupt? What was it like?
What is your favourite kind of volcano?

Earthquakes and tsunamis
Earthquakes and tsunamis are very dangerous.
Earthquakes can damage a lot of roads and cities.
A tsunami is a massive wave that smashes onto the ground.
Here are some of the damages they can cause...
Smashed buildings
Tsunamis
It can damage roads so cars can't go on them anymore.
Earth quakes can cause landslides or mud slides.
Scientists have been trying to invent a machine that tells us when earthquakes are coming but so far they haven't succeeded. Earthquakes can happen without any warning.
Questions
Why do earthquakes happen?
Why do tsunamis happen?
Have you ever been in an earthquake or tsunami? What was it like?

All about tigers.
Tigers live in cold places.
Cubs leave home when they are three years old.
Mother tigers are called tigresses.
Tigers cannot run fast for very long.
Tigers sometimes live alone.
Tigers stripes help them hide in grass.
Tigers eat pigs and deer.
A hunting tiger makes no noise.
Tigers hunt at night.
Asian tigers have thick coats that keep them warm.

Weather art
Matawhero 14 has been looking at weather and the water cycle. As a part of this unit the students have produced this artwork using pastels and dye.
The students were required to incorporate aspects of a wet weather or stormy scene. They needed to understand the concepts of foreground and background, blending pastels, position and size of features and creating outlines with dye.
Here is some of the artwork that presents these concepts well and shows some of the different types of weather explored by the students.
Olivia's snow scene.
Awatea's lightning scene.
Vania's rainy day.
Tayla's rainbow.
What type of weather would you have drawn?
What do you like best about these pictures?
Would you like to see more of our amazing artwork?

Collection
When it rains it falls into rivers or sinks into the earth. Rain can also go into lakes and oceans. This is called collection.
How Evaporation Works
Evaporation is when the burning sun brings the water up to the sky from the ground. It turns into a gas called water vapour. It forms into a cloud. This is called evaporation.

Raining down.
Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it any more. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail or snow.
Evaporation
Evaporation is when the water evaporates into the clouds and it stays in the clouds for a little while. The sun heats up the water and it gets caught in the clouds.
Our condensation freeze frame
The water vapour or steam in the air starts to get cold and it changes into another state of matter called liquid. This is called condensation.
